How To Discover Your Life Purpose

The two most important days in your life are: the day you were born and the day you know the reason why you were born.” by Les Brown

Are you clear why you are here in this world? Do you know your purpose for living?

If your answer is “No”, I know how you feel. I didn’t know the answer of these questions a few years ago either. My intention in this post is to help you get clear on your life purpose. Would you like me to help you? Keep reading… You are going to love this :-).

Here is a great analogy I heard once that might help you understand the concept of having a life purpose.

Let’s say you commute on a highway on your way to work everyday. Think of your purpose as the highway and the signs posted along the road as your dreams and goals you are achieving in the journey of life. Remember, your purpose is an ongoing process, like a long highway.

Just this weekend I was having a conversation with a friend about my blog and I told him that sometimes I write my articles the same day I’m suppose to post them (like this one). He laughed and then replied to me saying “that must be stressful”.  I laughed too :-). And my answer was simple and straight to the point.

I told him that when I was going through college, studying Mechanical Engineering, I was feeling that way. I felt lots of tension, pressure, massive headaches and very stressful every time I had to create a report about my weekly experiments. Hehe :-(. At that point in my life I didn’t realize that I was doing something out of purpose and not aligned with my passions.

It took me 27 years to get clear about my life purpose. I’m glad you are here today!!! I don’t want you to keep living your life out of purpose.

I found out that my current purpose is,

To inspire and encourage people to achieve their wildest dreams and to help them live life to the fullest potential based in joy, happiness and excitement.”

This is why I’m writing this post right now, to fulfill my purpose. To deliver a message of empowerment, inspiration, motivation and hope for everyone who want to accomplish anything. As a result of following my instinct and my purpose, this blog was created in April of this year. I hope you are enjoying the content I’ve been sharing in the last few months.

Like the captain of a ship who uses a compass to go to a destination and doesn’t get lost, you too need some kind of tool to guide you in life. And it’s call your life purpose.

Once you find it, it’s going to be your north, your compass, and your

lighthouse in your life journey. If you choose to use it and live by it, you’ll have the opportunity to find meaning and passion in everything you do.

Today, I want to share with you the 4 step exercise that helped me clarify my life purpose. I learned this strategy in the book The Success Principles by Jack Canfield.

If you already have a purpose statement, that’s GREAT!!! I welcome you to participate.

But if you are lost and you know deep inside “YOU” that there is something bigger to do or to achieve in your life and you are not sure what it is, I have to tell you that this is going to be very helpful for you. This exercise will definitely put you in a situation to identify or get an idea of your true calling.

The Life Purpose Exercise (an exercise from Arnold Patent – www.arnoldpatent.com – obtained from the book The Success Principles by Jack Canfield)

1. List two of your unique personal qualities, such as enthusiasm and charisma.

Note: If you find this hard to do, ask a very close friend or your spouse to share with you what they think are your qualities.

2. List one or two ways you enjoy expressing those qualities when interacting with others such as to empower and to inspire.

3. Assume the world is perfect right now. What does this world look like? How is everyone interacting with everyone else? What does it feels like? Write your answer as a statement, in the present tense, describing the ultimate condition, the perfect world as you see it and feel it. Remember, a perfect world is a fun 🙂 place to be.

Examples: Everyone is freely expressing their own unique talents.

                Everyone is working in harmony.

                Everyone is expressing love.

4. Combine the three prior subdivisions of this paragraph into a single statement.

Example: My purpose is to use my enthusiasm and charisma to empower and inspire others to freely express their talents in a harmonious and loving way.

Figure out what you love to do as young as you can, and then organize your life around figuring out how to make a living at it.” Pat Williams (Senior Vice President of the Orlando Magic basketball team)

After you define your purpose everything will be more joyful 🙂, fun and exciting. Believe me!!! But, don’t get me wrong on this point. I’m not saying that everything is going to be easy and a piece of cheesecake. What I’m saying is that every step you make toward your dreams and goals will be on purpose and with a burning desire.

A very important insight I learned about this topic is that your purpose doesn’t have to be fixed. You are an evolving human being and through continuous self discovery you can modify your purpose at any time.

It’s all about resonating and feeling good about it. If you don’t resonate or feel that you are in “SYNC” with it, keep brainstorming and searching. Be aware of the things you love doing and the things you don’t even notice how fast the time fly by you. Those are indicators to help you in this process.

Don’t wait any longer… Jump out of that cliff and dare to get clear on why you are here and what are you going to do in this world.

I strongly believe that you have greatness within you and awesome things are waiting on your behalf.

  1. The secret lies within yourself. Passions + SKA (skills, knowledge, abilities) = Life Purpose. First, you’ll need to block off a specific period of time to think about it… Write it… Then: be brave and follow your life purpose. Now that’s a challenge! So, are you brave enough?

  2. Eli, thanks for commenting & for sharing your wealth of wisdom. I really appreciate your friendship & for being such a world class friend. Always looking to get better :-).

I loved the P+(SKA)= LP equation!! I’ve never heard it before. I’m more than brave… I’m fearless. It was great connecting with you & Luisra on the weekend.

    Could you share your LP?

  3. Sure! My LP is “To use my passion, excellence and orientation toward wellness to bring successful strategies and tools for organizations and individuals.”

I hope your readers take the challenge and follow their path once they discover it. Keeping in mind the easy part might be the discovery one…

BTW, my fearless friend: love your blog, keep it up! 😉

  4. Eli, something I know about you is that you are really passionate about helping people succeed. I’m happy 🙂 for you, for being clear about your LP.

Thanks again for swinging by!!! Until next time, more success to everything that you do.

  5. Enthusiastically doing things most people only think, talk or dream about doing, making the world more optimistic and motivating others to do the same! YES!
